After the Puzzle crew received one of the most impressive demos we've yet heard from psy trance impresario N-kore, we really didn't have any option but to get him down to the 414 for some serious psychedelic shenanigans. Ahead of his Puzzle Project debut this Saturday 27th March, Puzzle resident Ali Cantor caught up with this international man of mystery to see what makes him tick.
Hey N-Kore, how's tricks?
Good Thanks, you?
Not too shabby my friend! To kick us off, can you please tell us a little about yourself – your background and how you got into clubbing?
I am Frenchman in London who's been enjoying the nightlife of this city for 8 years now. It all started 10 years ago when I came to visit some friends who were living here. They took me to the Fridge for a night that totally changed my view on electronic music. I had the time of my life and at 22 decided that I wanted more of it. The best decision I have ever made!
And at what point did you make the jump up to DJing? What prompted you to make the move?
I always had admiration for the DJs and how they could move a crowd – the way they shared their passion for music with the crowd. I wanted to experience that feeling and understand what they were going through but actually never thought I'd end up playing in clubs. Initially it was more like a private pleasure.
Your psy demo certainly caught our resident psychedelic don Phil Lankester's ear. How do you go about constructing a good demo?
It first starts with either a feeling or a theme - then I select about 60 tracks that will complement that idea. From there I make sure that I have 2 or 3 big moment tracks that I know will come at some key times. The rest is just about the feeling.
Do you produce as well? If not do you have plans to start?
Producing is a big word. I have been experimenting for a year and am still in the learning curve. I am fascinated by the thought process that is involved in making a track. I have made few tracks so far that are psy but also have a very trancy side.

Apart from psy, do you play any other musical styles? What sort of non-dance music and bands do you like?
I mainly play psy but also all sides of trance music and a bit of Techno - as long as it generates emotion and natural energy it's fine for me. I like a bit of everything from Foo Fighters to classical. I do have a guilty secret - I enjoy ballads and love songs! Don't tell anyone but I used to be a big Celine Dion fan!
You're originally from France - what's your favourite food and what do you think of English cuisine?
I am torn in between steak tartar and sushi. English food is not that bad at all and the full english breakfast the best thing ever invented for after a big night out with the lads.
Excited about entertaining the Puzzle crowd? They're used to the very finest in underground dance music – can you give them a hint of what to expect from you?
You bet! Puzzle's crowd is known to be a real party crowd with real knowledge of music. From me they can expect energy, emotion and quirkiness and - a bit of marmite.
